Split – the Pearl of Dalmatia between the sea and the mountains
Do you miss the sea in our beautiful country? How about visiting the partner metropolis of Split, which will captivate you not only with its beautiful waters for swimming, but above all with its historical monuments and unique romantic atmosphere.
In this second-largest city of Croatia, located in the central Dalmatian region, you can slow down and enjoy the charm of the coastline, for example, on the most famous promenade, Riva. The word 'POMALO' (slowly) is, in fact, the main motto of the Dalmatians.
One of the city's greatest landmarks is undoubtedly Diocletian's Palace, which has been on the UNESCO list since 1979. This building represents one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture in the world and includes several picturesque streets, a cathedral, temples, and extensive underground chambers. The complex also includes a bell tower, located at Narodni trg square, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of Split.
If you decide to visit Split during the summer months, the beaches will definitely be your main place. The most popular beach in the city is Bačvice, which has been awarded the Blue Flag. However, the most beautiful beach is considered to be Kašji, located on the coast of the Marjan Forest Park. If you're looking for some shade on a hot summer day, Marjan Forest Park will be the perfect choice. There are many hiking trails where you can walk, enjoy some peace and quiet, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Adriatic. The park's ridge is formed by limestone rocks, which are ideal for enthusiastic climbers.
For those who want to swap lying on the beach for hiking, Split is the perfect place, as it is surrounded by mountains and hills on all sides. The area is dominated by the high karst mountain range of Mosor, with its highest peak, Veliki Kabal, reaching an altitude of 1,339 meters above sea level. Additionally, not far from Split, you can experience an even greater adrenaline rush by riding a 2.5-kilometer-long zip line.
The culture in the city is also definitely worth mentioning. The largest event held in the city is the Split Summer Festival, which takes place annually from mid-July to mid-August and includes various concerts and open-air theater performances.
For food lovers, Dalmatia also offers excellent Croatian cuisine, which mainly consists of fish, seafood, lamb, and Mediterranean herbs. The region is also known for its olive oil and excellent wine from the vineyards of Dalmatia.
The city of Split is the perfect starting point if you want to explore the surrounding area. Thanks to its strategic location, you'll be close to some of the most beautiful islands in Croatia, such as Brač, Šolta, Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo, and Vis. You’ll also have easy access to Krka National Park, famous for its stunning waterfalls and untouched nature.
