Piraeus – Gateway to Athens

The city of Piraeus, located just 12 km from Athens, is one of the most important maritime transport hubs in Europe. Besides the port, the city is also a significant industrial area of Greece, which is why it’s no surprise that it has established a partnership with Ostrava.

It is the most important port in Greece and one of the most significant ports in the entire Eastern Mediterranean, serving as a maritime gateway from Europe to Asia and North Africa. Apart from its commercial and economic significance, Piraeus is also a popular tourist destination, as cruise ships from all over the world arrive here, making it the busiest port for passenger traffic in Europe.

Piraeus exudes a historical atmosphere, as it is one of the suburbs of the Greek capital, Athens. However, this was not always the case, as in the past it consisted of two separate cities. Historians will surely be fascinated by the fact that the origins of the port date back to ancient Greece, to the 5th century BC. That is why you will find many preserved exhibits in the city. For example, you can visit, the Archaeological Museum, located on the shores of Zea Bay, or the Maritime Museum. In Zea Bay, you can also see the remains of ancient walls of Piraeus or the ruins of the Hellenistic Zea Theatre from the 2nd century BC.

Piraeus is also a great base for visiting nearby Athens, which is literally the heart of Ancient Greece. There you will find many famous monuments such as the Acropolis, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Panathenaic Olympic Stadium, the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and more.

If you are going on holiday to Athens, be sure not to miss our partner port city, Piraeus. Even if you are not going anywhere by boat, you can enjoy beautiful walks around the port, try some delicious Greek cuisine, or simply enjoy the sea breeze.
