Gaziantep – the birthplace of baklava
The city of Gaziantep, located in southeastern Turkey, is a place where you can experience Turkey in a way that’s a bit different way than just from a beach chair at an all-inclusive hotel. Here, you can experience the authentic Turkish culture, admire Ottoman architecture, and buy souvenirs and specialties at local markets.
One of the must-see attractions is definitely Gaziantep Castle (Gaziantep Kalesi), from where you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the historic center and its surroundings.
Gaziantep is home to the largest mosaic museum in the world, featuring some of the finest Roman mosaics of the ancient world. The museum is named after the city of Zeugma, where the mosaics originally came from. However, during floods caused by the Euphrates River, the mosaics were moved to Gaziantep. The museum also houses the most famous mosaic, known as the Gypsy Girl, which is considered the Mona Lisa of mosaics. If you are interested in visiting another museum, the Archaeological Museum, which offers a collection of artifacts from the Stone Age to the Roman period, will be the perfect choice.
Like every Turkish city, Gaziantep is home to many mosques that are definitely worth a visit. However, the rule applies that you should enter a mosque without shoes and women should be covered.
If shopping at the markets is your main goal, this area will not disappoint. Apart from the large historical souvenir market - Bedesten, you can visit the Copper Market -Bakircilar Çarsisi, where you can still see this craft in practice. Besides copper, you can also buy spices, oil, leather goods, and more. Unlike the markets in Istanbul, no one will bother you, so you can browse the goods comfortably.
When visiting the city, do not miss the opportunity to taste traditional baklava, which you will find on every corner. Gaziantep is the birthplace of this dessert made from sticky dough filled with pistachios. However, it is not just baklava that makes the local cuisine so unique. You will also find 30 different types of kebabs, lamb soup, and a breakfast delicacy called katmer, filled with pistachios. Be sure to order traditional Turkish tea or coffee with your meal. The gastronomy here is truly impressive. No wonder Gaziantep is listed as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
After a full day of exploring the city, you can relax in a traditional Turkish bath called Naib Hamam.
What makes the city so attractive to visitors is undoubtedly its affordability, friendly people, excellent cuisine, and beautiful historical monuments.
