6/2 2025

The highly anticipated international tennis Davis Cup took place at the RT Torax Arena in Poruba, which welcomed the popular tournament back for the first time since 2018. Following the draw for the specific qualifying matches held at the New City Hall in Ostrava, spectators in Poruba were treated to a showdown between the Czech tennis players and their South Korean counterparts.

The draw took place on January 30, with the names of the opponents drawn by Ostrava's mayor, Jan Dohnal.

The very next day, the Poruba arena hosted the first singles match: Jiří Lehečka against Gerard Campana Lee. The Czech representative secured a victory, winning in straight sets (6:3, 6:3), thereby instilling much-needed confidence in our team.

The excellent atmosphere created by the audience in the hall on January 31 and February 1 greatly benefited our selection. Tomáš Macháč smoothly defeated Soonwoo Kwon in straight sets (6:2, 6:2) and also performed admirably in doubles alongside Jakub Menšík. The duo triumphed in their match against Yun Seong Chung and Jisung Nam, winning 2:0 in sets (6:3, 6:1). After Maxim Mrva clinched a thrilling doubles victory over Sanhui Shin, also in straight sets (7:6, 7:6), the Czech team's overall victory of 4:0 was secured, allowing them to progress to the next rounds of the Davis Cup.

Ostrava has once again hosted an attractive sporting event of international significance, demonstrating that it rightfully holds the title of a sports city. Sports enthusiasts have had numerous opportunities to witness this, particularly during last year's immensely successful World Ice Hockey Championship.
