Parish Garden in Ostrava Heřmanice Reopens with New Features
On Sunday, April 13, the Parish Garden of St. Mark in Heřmanice was ceremonially reopened after completing its second phase of renovation. The project was supported by Ostrava’s “Creating Space” program, which enabled the garden's expansion and the addition of several new features: the “Corner of Virtues,” a gazebo, and a pétanque court.

The reopening ceremony included a blessing of the new additions, which are now open for public use. The improvements were made possible thanks to funding from the “Creating Space” grant, the Ostrava-Opava Diocese, individual donors, and a 354,000 CZK contribution from the City of Ostrava.
A standout feature is a large wooden climbing structure shaped like an old ship, which adds charm and playfulness to the garden.
Deputy Mayor Lucie Baránková Vilamová emphasized the broader significance of the project:
"Creating Space doesn’t just enhance public areas—it strengthens community ties. The Parish Garden shows that when the city supports a good idea and local unity, the outcome benefits everyone and enriches the entire city."
First opened to the public in 2019, the garden has since become a vibrant hub for community events, including open-air cinema nights, local Easter and Christmas celebrations. The recent expansion has created more space for rest and relaxation, with the new “Corner of Virtues” offering a peaceful zone for all generations. Visitors can also enjoy an outdoor table football setup under a shelter, oversized outdoor chess and many opportunities for intergenerational encounters and neighborhood bonding.
The garden is open year-round. From April to October, a snack bar serves refreshments and popular seasonal treats like ice cream. The garden is maintained by parish volunteers, with active involvement from the wider local community.
The “Creating Space” program is a strategic initiative of the City of Ostrava aimed at strengthening community life, involving citizens in city development, and improving the urban environment. Projects are built in or near urban areas and are accessible to the general public. Community participation and volunteerism are essential aspects of the program, which supports the goals of Ostrava’s strategic development plan under the fajnOVA brand.
