This year marked the 20th anniversary of the prestigious Moravian-Silesian Region Building of the Year competition. A total of 56 projects from across the Moravian-Silesian Region, completed in 2024 and 2025, competed in six categories and three subcategories. The GRAND PRIX, announced at the awards ceremony held in the Compressor Hall at Landek Park in Ostrava, went to the revitalization of the Theatre in Český Těšín. A number of projects located in Ostrava also achieved considerable success.

The Public Amenities – Public Spaces category was dominated by the Koupark multifunctional playground, a unique recreational project created through the complete redevelopment of a former outdoor swimming pool complex in Ostrava-Radvanice.

The colourful playground, offering a wide range of attractions for children and adults alike, features eight interconnected tunnels, seven slides, two tube slides, six trampolines and an extensive array of swings. One of the most popular attractions is a swing designed for children and parents to use together. Visitors can also enjoy two roundabouts, 28 bouncing balls, climbing holds and numerous other play elements.

Koupark was also the winner of the online public vote and therefore received the Public Choice Award.

Deputy Mayor of Ostrava and Mayor of the Radvanice and Bartovice Municipal District Aleš Boháč joined the awards ceremony online. His physical absence certainly did not diminish his delight at the project's success.

Ostrava architecture also performed very well across the competition categories in terms of honourable mentions. These were awarded to projects including the reconstruction of sedimentation tanks at the Nová Ves water treatment plant; the conversion of the former Ostravica Textilia buildings into the present-day Boutique Business Incubator Ostravica; the revitalization of the FLORIDA public space in Poruba; the SO.HOUSE Residence at Studentská 6248/8; a family house in Krásné Pole; the newly built Hametal industrial complex; and the Zlatý jelen Community Centre.

This year's special Construction Industry Personality Award went to Vlastimil Šmiřák, an Ostrava-based entrepreneur active in the construction sector, engineering services and technical consultancy.

The purpose of the Moravian-Silesian Region Building of the Year competition is to raise the profile of successful projects and completed buildings, as well as their designers and creators. At the same time, it aims to showcase the current standard of architecture and construction in the Moravian-Silesian Region to both professionals and the general public.

The competition is jointly organized each year by the Association of Building Entrepreneurs, the Czech Chamber of Chartered Engineers and Technicians, the Ostrava branch of the Society of Architects, and the Moravian-Silesian Region.

The submitted projects are assessed by an eleven-member expert jury representing all four organizers. At the beginning of each competition year, the jury members elect a chair from among themselves. The jury is not required to award either a main prize or an honourable mention in every category.

Since the competition was launched in 2007, a total of 774 projects have been entered. Of these, 385 have received awards, while 19 projects have received the competition's highest accolade, the GRAND PRIX.
