Ostrava Signs Memorandum for Construction of New Bazaly Football Stadium

7/4 2025

The City of Ostrava is moving forward with an ambitious and visionary project — the construction of a world-class football stadium, New Bazaly. This modern facility is set to become a new architectural and cultural landmark for the region and an international hub for sport, innovation, and tourism.

On March 29, 2025, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by key stakeholders, marking a major milestone in the stadium's development. The signing took place ahead of FC Baník Ostrava’s home match and confirms the city’s commitment to creating a multi-functional, sustainable sports venue with global reach.

The memorandum outlines a joint commitment to develop a stadium that meets the highest international standards — capable of hosting top-level matches, including those of the Czech national football team. The project also aims to return professional football to its historic home in Slezská Ostrava, a district rich in tradition and character.

The signatories include the Mayor of Ostrava Jan Dohnal, Chairman of the Board of FC Baník Ostrava Václav Brabec, representatives of the Football Association of the Czech Republic, the FC Baník Ostrava Academy association, and the Vítkovice Arena company.

The new stadium will be designed in line with the BREEAM sustainability certification, incorporating the latest in green building practices, energy efficiency, and smart technologies. It will feature:

  • Seating for 19,500–20,000 spectators
  • A football and sports museum as a new city attraction
  • State-of-the-art training facilities for youth and professional athletes
  • Full infrastructure for FAČR’s regional football academy

The city and its partners are also exploring innovative operational models and strategic financing options to ensure long-term sustainability, accessibility, and community integration. The venue will serve a wide audience — from local families and international tourists to elite athletes and sports organizations.

Architectural Excellence on a Global Stage

The city launched an international architectural competition in late 2024, attracting over 30 applicants from across the globe. This has now been narrowed to 10 architectural studios and consortia — representing both Czech and international talent.

In March 2025, shortlisted architects toured the future site of the stadium. The first-phase design submissions are due by May 29, 2025, after which an expert jury, including leading international architects, will select the winning concept. The final design is expected to be announced by the end of 2025.

This new sports venue is envisioned not only as the finest football stadium in the Czech Republic, but also as an architectural centerpiece with a strong urban presence — harmonizing with Ostrava’s historical landmarks like the iconic New City Hall, itself a product of a similar design competition over a century ago.
