New Penguin Exhibit Under Construction at Ostrava Zoo

Construction is expected to last two years. The new exhibit will be located in the central part of the Ostrava Zoo and Botanical Park, replacing outdated enclosures that once housed tigers. The modern facility is designed for 15 to 50 penguins, replicating their natural habitat.
“The exhibit will not only serve breeding purposes but also offer visitors a closer look at these unique animals, which have never before been kept at Ostrava Zoo,” said Deputy Mayor Lucie Baránková Vilamová. "After months of preparation, we have finally selected a contractor for the project, which is being fully funded by the City of Ostrava.”
The new home will house African penguins, a vulnerable species native to the southern African coast. According to Zoo Director Jiří Novák, the exhibit will highlight the zoo's expertise in aquatic systems while offering an engaging and educational underwater experience.
Visitors will be able to observe the penguins from close range—separated only by railings and glass panels. A pool with a geyser feature, a naturalistic landscape of rocks and beaches, and a flowing waterfall will recreate the penguins’ coastal habitat. A model of a large coastal boulder, typical of the African penguin’s environment, served as the ceremonial cornerstone.
Interactive educational features will help raise awareness about the threats facing this species. The exhibit will also include an underwater cave with large viewing windows and an aquarium showcasing various fish species.
A two-way staircase will lead from the cave to the roof of the penguin facility, where visitors can enjoy views of the outdoor enclosure and pool from above. Behind the scenes, the building will house water treatment systems, indoor penguin pools and enclosures, and technical and zookeeping facilities.
Mayor Jan Dohnal emphasized the zoo’s importance not just as a tourist attraction—popular with both domestic and international visitors—but also as a conservation and educational institution. “The City of Ostrava continues to support the development of the zoo. As the main investor in this project, we are proud to help bring the penguins to Ostrava,” he said.
The project, with an estimated cost of over CZK 120 million (excluding VAT), is being carried out by PSG Construction. The design was prepared by V&V Structural Engineering.
