More new cycles routes for Ostrava
Cyclists are now able to use almost 5 kilometres of newly opened cycle routes in the heart of Ostrava, from Muglinovská Road to the footbridge near the Silesian Ostrava Castle. In the period 2013–2015 Ostrava plans to build a further 51 kilometres of cycle routes, creating a direct unbroken link between the city and the Beskydy mountains to the south.
There are now over 200 kilometres of cycle routes within Ostrava’s city boundaries. The routes are financed partly from the City’s own budget and partly from European Union funds.
Deputy Mayor Tomáš Sucharda explained the idea behind the programme: “It is our aim to create a complete and self-contained network of cycle routes, which will be kept separate from motorized transport wherever possible. In the upcoming months we will be completing five important routes with a total length of 16 kilometres. These routes will run along the Ostravice and Odra Rivers, providing a direct link between some of the most densely populated parts of Ostrava and major employers.”
