A Safer Summer in Ostrava
This is already the third year of information activities during which prevention officers from the Ostrava Municipal Police and the Police of the Czech Republic provide recommendations on safe behaviour during the summer season. The events are organised in cooperation with the city-owned company SAREZA.
“Preventive activities play an important role in combating crime, and they have a long tradition in Ostrava. As early as 2007, the city established the Safer Ostrava working group, which organises dozens of different information campaigns every year. We also operate the Safer Ostrava website, where residents can find information related to safety and security. Back in 1996, the Prevention and Supervision Unit of our Municipal Police was established. At that time, it consisted exclusively of women officers, and its activities focused primarily on preventive programmes for children and young people. Our municipal police officers have therefore been engaged in prevention work for three decades. Last year alone, the Ostrava Municipal Police carried out 1,471 preventive programmes and educational talks. We approach the prevention of various crisis situations comprehensively. For example, the current Safer Summer campaign focuses on reducing property crime and is being held for the third time this year,” explained Mayor Jan Dohnal.

Over the past ten years, Ostrava has invested more than CZK 260 million in crime prevention measures, with almost CZK 19 million invested in the previous year alone. During the same period, the number of recorded criminal offences has declined. In 2015, the Ostrava Regional Police Directorate registered 12,479 criminal offences, while in 2025 police recorded only 8,264 such offences. Over the past decade, the city has invested more than CZK 260 million in crime prevention, including almost CZK 19 million in the previous year alone. Ostrava continues to pursue a broad range of preventive measures and support programmes.
Visitors to swimming pools and the leisure facilities will be reminded to follow basic safety principles and to bring only essential items with them. The use of security lockers or storage facilities available at the venues is recommended for keeping documents, mobile phones, keys and other valuables safe. Prevention officers also advise visitors not to leave valuables unattended on blankets or in parked vehicles, especially if such items are left in plain sight.
