Air transport
Leoš Janáček Ostrava International Airport (OSR) is located just 20 km from the city centre. Civil air traffic operations began here 1959. It is the biggest regional airport in the Czech Republic with a capacity of more than one million passengers per year and a runway 3500m in length and 63m wide, allowing it to accommodate the world’s largest airplanes.
The airport caters to both domestic and international flights, scheduled and chartered, and is equipped to handle the administration of airfreight, including warehousing capacities. There are regular flights to Prague nad Vienna, all hub to hundreds of other destinations around the world, and new flights are being added regularly.
In 2006, a new terminal has been added to the Airport facilities. The new two-storey departure hall, with a capacity of 500 passengers per hour, is divided into two parts — for those travelling to Schengen member countries, and those travelling to other countries. The new arrivals hall increases the capacity of the airport to 3 million passengers a year.
There are regular bus connections from the Airport to Ostrava and Nový-Jičín that are synchronised with departures and arrivals.
