Modern buildings for the University of Ostrava
The University of Ostrava plans to build a new multi-purpose facility in the centre of Ostrava near the River Ostravice, to serve students and the general public. One of the new buildings will be a modern facility for sport, health and technology; the other is a new building for the Art and Design Cluster of the University of Ostrava's Faculty of Arts.
Promoting first-class education is one of the city's priorities in the strategic plan. Ostrava does not want to be just a centre of technical education, but also to significantly contribute to the development of humanities. It contributed to the establishment of the Medical Faculty a few years ago and is now at the beginning of another key development project of the University of Ostrava.
The University acquired the land as a donation from the City of Ostrava. The area is almost 4 hectares and it is located behind the Antonín Dvořák Theatre in the city centre. The project will revive the area and enrich the city centre with a new modern architecture.
The University of Ostrava would like to finance the construction of the two buildings using the funds from the European Union, which could contribute almost CZK 900 million. The grant decision will be made by the end of 2018. If it succeeds, at the beginning of 2019 the university will select a contractor and start building in the summer. If not, the land will be returned to the city.
