The city of Ostrava is planning a significant transformation of the Fifejdy area. In addition to the revitalization of a brownfield site and urban development of the currently unattractive land, a new multi-purpose sports hall for at least 3,500 spectators will be built, designed specifically for ball sports.

The existing industrial hall will be reconstructed into a multi-purpose sports facility, and a second, new hall will be built to serve as a training space. The main hall will be equipped to host top-tier international sports events, including European and World Championships. The facility will also be available to children’s and youth sports clubs and can be used for various cultural and social events. The project includes the construction of paved areas and parking spaces around the hall.

"The main hall will include not only the playing surface but also athlete facilities such as locker rooms, a gym, rehabilitation areas, and wellness. Spectators will enjoy standard amenities along with spaces for dining, sky boxes, and media/commentator areas. In the training hall, athletes will have access to four playing areas, primarily for volleyball, basketball, floorball, and artistic gymnastics. The larger hall will cover 5,440 m², and the smaller one will be 2,366 m². The two halls will be connected by a link corridor. The primary energy source will be heat pumps with ground-source wells. The project also includes the construction of paved areas and parking with approximately 270 parking spaces,” details Mayor Jan Dohnal.

For the realization of the project, land exchanges and purchases were necessary, which were approved by the city council earlier this year. Detailed information regarding the acquisition of real estate can be found at this link: https://1url.cz/k17I3. The city now holds the project documentation for the multi-purpose hall and has received the joint construction permit. The architectural design by Platforma Architekti blends the original architecture with contemporary elements. The city has already launched a public tender for the development of detailed project documentation for construction. The deadline for submitting bids was in early March, and the offers are currently being evaluated. Following that, the relevant design work will begin, and the public tender for the construction contractor is expected to be announced in the fall of this year. Ideally, construction should start in early 2026, and the third-largest sports hall in Ostrava is expected to be completed by mid-2028.

The estimated cost of constructing the sports facility is currently 800 million CZK, excluding VAT. According to previous agreements, the Moravian-Silesian Region will contribute 80 million CZK to the funding, but the city will also seek additional support through the National Sports Agency's grant program for Regional Infrastructure. The majority of construction costs will be borne by the city of Ostrava.

“The National Sports Agency welcomes the city’s initiative to build a new multi-purpose hall that will provide top-tier facilities for various ball sports and expand the region’s sports capacity. We recognize that the city of Ostrava is actively and diligently supporting sports and physical activities, and the development of infrastructure is an integral part of this effort. We are ready to include this project in the National Sports Infrastructure program, where, in the case of a successful application, support can reach up to 300 million CZK,” clarifies Ondřej Šebek, Chairman of the National Sports Agency.

“The entire project to build the multi-purpose sports hall, which will serve not only professional athletes but also the general public, is a great example of collaboration between the city and the state. Cooperation within public administration at all levels is key to developing modern infrastructure, and I am pleased that the city’s vision has been supported by the state and other partners. As a huge basketball fan, I look forward to attending sporting events at the new hall, which, I hope, will host many exciting matches,” says Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura.

“We have long supported the modernization and construction of sports infrastructure systematically. Ostrava is a venue for internationally significant sports events, but we also strongly support activities for children and recreational athletes. Among the many completed projects, it is worth mentioning the renovation of the Poruba Sports Complex in 2023, which had been in need of modernization for nearly 50 years. In the same year, a sports hall was completed in Ostrava-Třebovice. Last year, the renovation of the multi-purpose complex in Poruba was completed, including the renovation of two ice rinks. The renovation of the SAREZA Water World is nearing completion, and intensive construction is underway on another project, the indoor shooting range on Plzeňská Street. Preparations for the construction of the new football stadium at Nové Bazaly are also in full swing,” concludes Mayor Jan Dohnal.
