Good news for the region: two Ostrava universities to merge

VSB-Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO) and University of Ostrava (OU) began merging. The process should be finished in 2015. The name of the new educational institution has not yet been selected. Ministry of Education will fund the first phase of the project with 40 million CZK. Universities of Ostrava are the first universities in the country, which are merged.

"I welcome the information about merging Ostrava Universities, which would become the third largest university in the country. This is good news for the whole region and Ostrava. Ostrava would thereby confirm its role as an important university city, "said Mayor of Ostrava Petr Kajnar. According to OU Rector Jiří Močkoř, the merger of universities could be an impulse for the development of the region. The Rector of the Technical University of Ostrava Ivo Vondrak told the meeting concerning the merger will begin next week. First, team that will analyze the differences between the two universities will be created. Bright future is not yet for the name of the new university, it is possible that it will be chosen in the competition. OU has six faculties with approximately 10 000 students, Technical University of Ostrava has seven faculties, focused primarily on technical and economic fields, and around 25 000 students.
